Strangely, a/b is not required in either case. Worse yet is "15va/15vb" (quindicesiva/quindicesivb?). ![]() Similarly, 15ma has been split by the same school into "15ma/15mb," which yields "quindicesimb." These words do not exist. Well, that's fine, but the word isn't ottavb. If you do this, then you can swap out the "a" for "b" for "bassa," or "low" (should be "sotto," for "below"). Too many people have taken the "a" in "8va" to mean "alta," or "high" (it should be "sopra," for "above"). The "8va/8vb" thing is a bit of a misnomer. "15ma" is an abbreviation of the Italian word for fifteenth, "quindicesima" ("15" in Italian is "quindici").
